Design and Technology

Design and technology gives children the opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and understanding of design, innovation and building. This helps nurture their creativity and problem solving skills as they attempt to build and construct a range of varying products in the different year groups. Their learning stretches the children from using varying medias and techniques which include, sewing, electronics and constructing in order to create a quality product. Children are encouraged, right from the Early Years, to experiment with, and investigate, ways of building and strengthening using various different materials.

As the children progress through the school, they also develop skills of evaluation and start to consider how they can alter their designs to create a product that best fits the success criteria. In KS2, children are introduced to technology including computer aided design, to be able to design and implement their ideas. They can then evaluate their choice of materials, technique and process in order to improve their work through trial and error.

Design and technology is additionally used as a route to further investigate learning in science and maths. This way children are not just enjoying the process of designing and building but are able to make cross curricular links through their investigations.

Our Aims

  • To produce creative work, exploring new technologies with practical experience and innovative ideas.
  • To design, make and evaluate high quality prototypes and final products.
  • To understand nutrition and the principles of healthy eating and learn how to cook and include these into our daily diets.
  • Learn about great inventors, designers, engineers, chefs and manufacturers who have developed ground breaking products.
